Hey, when we did that totally unexpected special on Image Mapper… Yep, Image Mapper for only $4.99! …the web went wild! Crazy? Nah—image maps are still used every day, and for good reason, too. They are great for visualizing information and conveying meaning. They’re interactive and more fun to look at than simple text links. We can’t even fathom how many cool maps are made with Image Mapper every single day. The truth is that you’ll find yourself wanting an image map sooner or later. So when we said “Come celebrate the birthday of the second app we ever made and pick it up for less than the cost of a [insert anything from Starbucks],” everybody and their mother wanted in. We got the kudos we like so much here at CoffeeCup, too: “Thanks for a brilliant little program” — Peter Gibb “WOW geezzzzz WOW it works!” — Lewis C (overhearing his daughter) Sadly, some missed the party (and the after party) and won’t stop nagging us about it. It really ain’t our fault—but hey, we like a good party or four. So one more time: The Image Mapping Party Details Imagine you’ve got one giant super-cool image but you want different parts of it to be clickable. Sure, you could chop it up into dozens of tiny pieces, painstakingly reassembling them on a webpage so that certain parts are links...but that would be a horrible waste of time! Welcome to the wonderful world of image mapping. Just load up your picture, draw shapes around clickable parts of it, and supply links to create hot spots in your image. Use squares, rectangles, circles, or the unique free-form chicken-nugget-shaped buttons (really). Here’s a view of the Image Mapper workspace: Hey, can you give me some inspiration? Of course! Get a diagram of the solar system and draw circles around the sun, each planet, and their moons. Now drop in links to more information for each celestial body. Wait, wait, here’s a better one: You have a map of Europe and want each country to be clickable. Simply load up the image and use the polygon tool to draw borders around the countries. Picture of your face? Circles on the eyes, a rectangle over the nose, and polygon around the mouth. Now each facial feature is a web link! A picture of the floorplan of your house links to first-person photographs from the inside. Puppies need homes! Click the one you like the most for adoption info. Yes, this could go on and on, because image maps are almost universally applicable! Yep, you made tons of links using one simple image. Now your website visitors can get click-happy, and you only had to load up your graphic and image mapping code. Experts agree that image mapping is exactly 192,765 times easier than image slicing! Some things get better over time, and with 15 2/3 years of refinement, Image Mapper is definitely one of them. Therefore… (Psst Amigo, forward this and bring some friends to the party—we won’t mind.) |
