Hey, the world didn't end… but the web as we know it will.

Phew, today’s not the end of the world…

…but the end of the world wide web as we know it is near.

Yep, it’s gonna be responsive. And that’s good—you’ll have one site to serve them all.
Web sites and web design are changing (for the better) and we will help you make the transition. Didn’t know it was coming? Then read to the end for some background.

This is a time for reflection.
We’re going to look back through the updates and releases we did this year and count the number of beans (and other caffeinated objects) that helped make it all happen.

You should be reflecting, too. It will help you to get ready for the exciting new phase our web is entering into. Hey, everything’s gonna be relative now, that’s pretty cool. ;)

This is a time for giving, too.
We’ll be giving all we have to help you smoothly transition into this responsive future with software, tutorials, themes, and more. But let’s not wait, we can start giving today!

Our coupon code CHARITY takes 30% off your entire order. Of this, 15% goes back in your pocket, and 15% will be donated to charity (one laptop per child).

→ Use that coupon (and help empower the poorest children through education)

Following a short debate, our team chose One Laptop Per Child because they help educate children in poverty through the use of technology. We believe that education is key to self-empowerment and one of the best long-term solutions for a sustainable, brighter future. We’re all part of one connected web world, after all. :)

So please go ahead and shop to your liking and know your purchase was not just for yourself—you just helped the world become a better place.

So what’s this dramatic “end of the web as we know it” all about, anyway?

Well, just think about the enormous amount of different mobiles and tablets that are gonna end up in stockings and under trees this holiday season. They’ll bring mobile web traffic from a whole range of devices with varying screen sizes.

Then what’s gonna happen? Some of them will zoom, pan, and swipe your website, trying to find what they came for. Others will simply leave. The point is this: no matter what they might do, the best way of serving all of them is with a site that responds to their screen size.

Creating a separate mobile site used to be the most common approach but has become impractical (exactly which screen size is the site targeting?) Having multiple sites also causes confusion for visitors and search engines (where exactly am I?) Then there’s the additional work of maintaining content across sites.

Luckily, Responsive Web Design has come to the rescue. The techniques, introduced by Ethan Marcotte as we blogged about, have been around for a while. But the recent explosion of screen sizes steadily increased its popularity during 2012 and has already been labeled the hottest web design trend for 2013.

Until the end of the year, we’re gonna send you little updates on this, so keep watching your inbox for tips (and maybe something big). Leave it to us to get you ready—and excited—for the new design world that will knock your socks off.

Watch that inbox. :)
