Twitter Feed Hacked
NASA’s digital experts got a brief surprise on Friday when a hacker broke into the agency’s astronaut Twitter feed and tried to peddle flat screen TVs.
The online invasion occurred on the @NASA_Astronauts feed, which distributes official NASA Twitter feeds from web savvy astronauts who post messages about their missions.
NASA spokeswoman Stephanie Shierholz told SPACE.com that “five sales tweets were sent” from the agency account. NASA’s Twitter overseers spotted the hack in less than 15 minutes and immediately fought back, Shierholz said.
Shierholz said the experts monitor the feeds closely, and once the issue was discovered, corrective action was taken. All five hacked posts were aimed at advertising LCD or plasma flat screen televisions, she added.
